The whole film industry has been impacted and significantly slowed by the Coronavirus pandemic during 2020 and into 2021, affecting not just film production but also many scheduled theatrical releases. Most of the main film awards have been affected, resulting in delays to the selection process and with many aspects of the presentation ceremonies taking place online. Nevertheless the Golden Globes still kicked off the season, with the nominations for the 78th Golden Globes being announced on February 3rd 2021, and the winners (listed first below) announced at the online ceremony on February 28th 2021. In the Music categories these were:

For "Soul" pianist / singer / composer / bandleader Jon Batiste composed the music used in the film's jazz sessions which also served as reference for those animated musical sequences, while Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross also composed the film's score. A special mfiles congratulations is due to singer / songwriter / actress Andra Day for winning Best Actress for her role as Billie Holiday in "The United States vs. Billie Holiday" (in addition to her Original Song nomination), and to singer / songwriter / actor / composer / everything Lin-Manuel Miranda on the Best Actor nomination for his role as Alexander Hamilton in the film version of Miranda's musical "Hamilton".

BAFTA does not have a Song Category. However the BAFTA Video Game awards and the BAFTA Television Craft awards are separate events taking place every year in the Spring. The nominations for the Video Game awards were released on 2nd March 2021 and the winners will be announced at the online awards ceremony on 25th March:
