"As with Gladness Men of Old" is a popular Christmas Carol whose lyrics were written by William Chatterton Dix (1837-1898) an English writer of hymns. It is usually sung to music written earlier by the German composer Conrad Kocher (1786-1872). As a result of this association the tune has come to be known as "Dix" in hymnals, though the same music is also used for another hymn called "For the Beauty of the Earth". The most popular arrangement of the music is by the English composer William H. Monk (1823-1889) who also composed the music for "Abide with Me" (known as Eventide).
