A gentle and traditional Chistmas carol, the lyrics were written by Rector Phillips Brooks in 1868 after a visit to the holy land, and the original melody (called "St. Louis") was written by his church organist, Lewis Redner. This version is also well-known and based on a Traditional Tune called "Forest Green" which was arranged as a hymn by the English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams.
