"Arietta" is the first of many piano pieces by Edvard Grieg from the collection known as the "Lyric Pieces", which are similar in concept to Mendelssohn's Songs Without Words. Many classical piano students will come across the "Lyric Pieces" in the course of there studies and find various challenges to help improve their technique. While this piece looks deceptively simple, the challenge is to get good phrasing in all the voices to make the overall piece "lyrical".
