This traditional Christmas Carol is called either "Gabriel's Message", "The Angel Gabriel" or "The Basque Carol". It is thought that this Carol was one of the songs found by the French composer Charles Bordes (1863-1909) while researching traditional Basque music. He published several of these traditional songs, and some were translated and popularised elsewhere in Europe. This version has been arranged for oboe and piano, and we also have a version arranged for guitar by Welsh guitarist Glenn Jarrett, and an arrangement for solo piano by Jim Paterson.
The sheet music parts for the arrangement illustrated here are Oboe (or other instruments in C e.g. flute or violin) and the score or piano accompaniment. As replacements for the oboe part, the options are High instruments in C e.g. piccolo, Bass instruments in C e.g. bassoon, cello or trombone, instruments in B-flat e.g. clarinet or trumpet, instruments in F e.g. cor anglais or french horn, instruments in E-flat e.g. alto saxophone or viola using the alto clef.
