"Leaning on the Everlasting Arms" is a Christian Hymn with lyrics and music written by the Rev. Anthony Johnson Showalter (1858-1924) taking the phrase "Everlasting Arms" in the title from the book of Deuteronomy. The hymn has featured prominently in at least two films: "Night of the Hunter" where it is sung by Robert Mitchum's character, and "True Grit" (2010) where Carter Burwell adapts the hymn as the film's main theme.
