It was first sung by Vesta Victoria who used to perform it holding a kitten, and that idea was copied by other performers. Although the lyrics overtly talk about pets and the kitten suggests a sweet innocence, when performed suggestively in music halls the words can also be interpreted as refering to male and female genitals. Despite that older association, the song has proved very popular with families and with children. It has been sung by many artists, and used in several films and TV shows. May Belfort was an English singer who performed in the nightclubs of Paris, and in 1895 the artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec painted her with her black cat singing the song.
