Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach : La Caroline (for piano)

Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (or C. P. E. Bach) was the 2nd son of Johann Sebastian Bach, and wrote many works for the keyboard instruments of his day. Among these works are many "character pieces" which tend to be short works with a free structure. Many of those character pieces seem to be named after people and are assumed to be musical portraits of people that CPE Bach knew. The work presented on this page is called "La Caroline" and was probably named after his daughter, Anna Carolina Philippina. There is another character piece called "La Philippine" which may also be his daughter. The tempo instruction for the work is "Allegro ma con Tenerezza" meaning "lively but tenderly", so should not be played too fast to allow some tenderness to come through.
