The Adieu Op. 85 no. 2 is Felix Mendelssohn's 38th Song without Words. These "Songs without Words" (or "Lieder ohne Worte") were a popular form of expression with the composer, and in total he published 48 such piano pieces in 8 sets of 6 during his tragically short life as a composer. The song titles of these works were added later by publishers rather than by the composer himself and this one is known as "The Adieu".
